Friday 14 November 6pm - Sunday 16 November 3pm
Institute of Physics, 76 Portland Place, London
This year saw the introduction of the new Nexus Student Conference, which amalgamated parts of the old Young Physicists Conference (YPC) and the Nexus AGM.
The Conference took place over the mid-November weekend at the Institute's headquarters in London, near Regent's Park, starting at 6pm on Friday 14 November and ending at 3pm on Sunday 16 November.
Academic student lectures and a poster session were held alongside displays and presentations from a number of student physics and astronomy societies about their activities during the past year. The weekend also featured a fascinating guest lecture by Professor Jim Al-Khalili of the University of Surrey. The lecture focused on the recent documentary series Atom, shown on BBC 4, and the outreach work that this was part of. Saturday afternoon was dedicated to the Nexus Awards for the best student societies, which were presented at the formal dinner in the evening by guest speaker Sir Arnold Wolfendale, former Astronomer Royal and Emeritus Professor at the University of Durham, who also gave a humorous and thought-provoking speech.
A total of 76 students and guests attended the weekend from 22 different universities across the UK and Ireland, and 15 different student societies were present from seven of the eight Nexus regions.
We are pleased to announce that the winners of this year's Nexus Awards are:
Best Society 2008
University of Kent Space Soc
Most Improved Society 2008
LUPAS - Lancaster University Physics and Astronomy Society
Best Publicity and Communications 2008
